How to get daily chess puzzles on your Kindle Scribe

Why the Scribe suits chess puzzles

A tactics puzzle is a board, a question, and some thinking. On a phone, the app wants you to tap a move straight away. On the Scribe you can look at the position for as long as you like, draw arrows, cross out lines that don't work, and write down your answer before you check it. That's how players have trained from puzzle books for a century.

Getting puzzles onto the device

The Scribe accepts PDFs by email, so any puzzle sheet you can turn into a PDF will work:

  • Print a puzzle page to PDF and email it to your @kindle.com address, after adding your sending address to Amazon's Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  • Buy a puzzle book from the Kindle store. It's a fixed set, and the answers are usually a tap away.

Either way, you're doing it by hand, and picking puzzles at the right difficulty is up to you.

What Daily Scribe does

Daily Scribe has a Chess Puzzles section. Choose a level, from Beginner (under 1200) to Expert (2400+), and how many puzzles you want each day, up to four. Each puzzle shows:

  • the board from your side, with coordinates
  • whose move it is
  • the task, such as "Mate in 2" or "Win decisive material"
  • a line to write your answer on

The solutions come after a spacer page, so you won't see them by accident. Each solution gives the full line in standard notation, a small board after every move with the squares it used outlined, and a link to replay the puzzle on Lichess. A short key explains how to read the notation, so it works even if you've never read chess moves before.

The puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, which Lichess releases free for anyone to use. Daily Scribe only picks puzzles that have been played many times and rated well. If you also take the news or the crossword, the puzzles come in the same daily email.

Solving on the Scribe

  • Write your candidate moves beside the board before you check the solutions.
  • Draw arrows on the board. Pen strokes cost nothing, so try lines out.
  • If a puzzle beats you, open the Lichess link and play through it.
