A pen, a grid, and e-ink — a good match

Solving a crossword on the Scribe is one of the nicer things you can do with the pen: no glare, no battery anxiety, and you can rest your hand on the screen. The catch is supply. Amazon sells crossword books in the store, but a book is a fixed set of puzzles you work through once. Most solvers want a new puzzle every day, the way it arrives in a newspaper.

Getting a puzzle onto the device

The Scribe accepts PDFs by email, so any puzzle you can turn into a PDF you can read and write on:

Print-to-PDF a puzzle from a site that offers one, then email it to your @kindle.com address — after adding your sending address to Amazon's Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
Some constructors publish a daily PDF you can download and forward.

Both work; both are a manual step every single day; and you have to keep the answer key somewhere separate so you don't spoil it.

What Daily Scribe does

Daily Scribe includes a write-in crossword section: a fresh puzzle in every edition, grid and clues on page one, the answer key on page two so nothing is spoiled until you flip. It arrives with the rest of your edition at the time you choose, and because it is a normal PDF you solve it with the pen exactly as you would a printed grid.

If you also take the news or a Kanji sheet, the crossword rides along in the same daily digest — one email, one document.

Solving on the Scribe

Use a thin pen setting; the default nib can crowd small squares.
Keep the eraser within reach — the Premium Pen's shortcut button, or the on-screen eraser tool.
Export your finished page from the Scribe's share menu if you want to keep it.
